The Side-by-Side with Gun & Dog catalogue accompanies the exhibition by the same name, on view at the National Sporting Library & Museum from September 25 through March 20, 2016. This ambitious loan exhibition gathers over forty paintings and sculptures from public and private collections. The material brings into focus the quintessential relationship between gunning enthusiasts and gun dogs captured in eighteenth- through twentieth-century British, French, and American portraits and landscapes.
The richly-illustrated, 128-page catalogue with full-page color plates includes a preface by Executive Director Melanie L. Mathewes, foreword by Chairman of the Board Manuel H. Johnson, Ph.D., and essay and plate descriptions by the George L. Ohrstrom Jr. Curator of Art Claudia P. Pfeiffer. The text chronicles gunning culture contemporary to the artworks, delves into the compositions to offer insight into the variety of practices over time, and illuminates the artists who created the works and were often sporting enthusiasts themselves.
